RICE scoring model
RICE scoring turns gut instinct into a number you can defend. Consider a backlog of twenty features: the three that get championed loudest walk into planning with momentum, while the rest wait their turn based on whoever spoke most recently. RICE gives all of them a fair hearing. Each feature or initiative is assessed across four dimensions — how many users it Reaches, how much Impact it will have (scored 0.25–3), how Confident your team is in those estimates (as a percentage), and how much Effort it will take in person-months. Divide the first three together by effort and you get a RICE score. Higher scores surface to the top.
RICE works best when your team already tracks user data and can make reasonable estimates for reach and impact. It is most powerful when comparing a large set of features where gut instinct would otherwise drive the conversation.
RICE is only as good as the estimates that go into it. Teams with little historical data may find the inputs speculative. The confidence multiplier can also be gamed — use it with care and transparency.

Weighted Shortest Job First
WSJF (Weighted Shortest Job First) is a prioritisation model from the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). It scores each job by dividing its Cost of Delay (CoD) by its Job Size — because shorter jobs with high CoD should almost always be done first. The magic is in how CoD is calculated: it is the sum of Business Value, Time Criticality, and Risk Reduction / Opportunity Enablement.
Business Value measures the relative benefit to users and the organisation. Time Criticality captures urgency — a useful test: if a competitor launches the same capability next month, does the value of this item drop by half? If yes, Time Criticality is high. Risk Reduction / Opportunity Enablement scores what you gain by acting (or lose by waiting). Each is scored relative to the others in your backlog using a Fibonacci-style scale.
WSJF is ideal for Lean and SAFe teams with a continuous-flow backlog. It excels in environments where a queue of similar-sized jobs needs to be ordered by economic value. It requires discipline to score each cost-of-delay dimension consistently.
MoSCoW method
MoSCoW (Must Have, Should Have, Could Have, Won't Have) is a prioritisation method developed by Dai Clegg at Oracle and later formalised in the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM). Unlike scoring models, MoSCoW is a categorisation exercise — it forces stakeholders to agree on what is truly essential for a given release.
MoSCoW shines when you need to align a mixed group of business, product, and engineering stakeholders on release scope quickly. It is especially useful at the start of a project or sprint when the scope is too broad and decisions need to be made fast.
Must Have
Non-negotiable requirements. The release fails without these.
Should Have
Important but not critical. Included if time allows without risk.
Could Have
Nice to have. Small impact if left out; first to drop under pressure.
Won't Have (this time)
Explicitly deferred. Valuable but not for this release cycle.

Maximum Difference Scaling
MaxDiff (Maximum Difference Scaling) is a research-grade prioritisation method where stakeholders do not rate items — they choose. In each round, they see a small subset of backlog items and identify the one that matters most and the one that matters least. Because it is always a comparative choice, not a rating, it eliminates the anchor bias and leniency bias that plague traditional scoring.
IbisFlow generates a balanced survey design: every item appears alongside different peers across multiple rounds. Stakeholders never feel overwhelmed because they only see a small set at once. After all rounds are complete, IbisFlow aggregates choices into a statistically sound priority ranking — not a simple average.

Rating scales ask people to judge items in isolation, which invites social desirability bias ("everything is important"), anchoring (first items inflate later ones), and scale differences between respondents (one person's 7 is another's 9). MaxDiff sidesteps all of this because you can only choose — you cannot hedge.
MaxDiff is the right choice when you have a large backlog (15–100+ items), multiple stakeholder groups whose priorities may differ, and when you want the result to be defensible and statistically robust. It works especially well for customer advisory boards, product reviews, or when internal gut-feel has lost credibility.
Buy a Feature method
Buy a Feature is a prioritisation method from Luke Hohmann's Innovation Games. Participants receive a fixed budget of fake currency and must decide how to spend it across a set of features, each with a price tag reflecting its relative development cost. Because people cannot afford everything, they are forced to make real trade-offs — the same kind of trade-offs product teams face every sprint.
Each feature is priced above what any single participant can afford alone, which encourages collaboration. When several stakeholders pool their money on a feature, it signals collectively high value. After the exercise, spending patterns reveal a clear priority ranking — not based on ratings or opinions, but on demonstrated willingness to invest.
Buy a Feature works best in facilitated workshop settings — product advisory boards, customer feedback sessions, or cross-functional planning workshops. It is especially effective when you want to engage non-technical stakeholders who find scoring frameworks abstract. The game-like format keeps engagement high and produces honest signals about what people actually value versus what they say they value.
